Julie, where are you from?
- I’m from the United States. I live in Redding, California. I was born in Nevada. I went to high school near Napa Valley. I lived in Oregon, then moved back to California, got married, had two boys, divorced, then re-married. He had a boy and a girl so I have four children and seven grandchildren. 
You have moved a lot in your life! What will you say is your favorite place to live?
- Probably near the ocean, by the beach. I lived in a city called Fortuna, lucky! [laughing] That part of California is the only place where you can see the giant redwoods. It’s gorgeous. Redding, the city where I live now, has a lot of outdoor activities, lakes, skiing in the winter, etc.
Perfect for your adventurous spirit! Tell us about it.
- Yes! For example, 20 years ago I took my son, who was 15 at the time, to an archaeological dig in Jordan for two months. We worked hard, got up at 4:30 in the morning, but it was an incredible experience. Also, I’ve done a lot of water sports such as kayaking and rowing. I also love bicycling.
All your life?
- Mostly when I met my second husband. He was a surfer, flew airplanes, everything. So we had a lot of adventures together.
What was the craziest one?
- Once, we had the most crazy day. We woke up early, got on a small plane as my husband was a pilot, and he flew us to the coast where he liked to surf. He surfed a bit and then we flew to another city nearby and did a skydive jump. Then we flew back home, drove up to the mountains and did night skiing, all in one day!
Sound so exiting! Aren’t you afraid sometimes? 
- Depends on what it is The skydiving is scary and intense. I’ve done it several times, but I like it very much.
You work in something very different from skydiving, right?
- Yes! [laughing] I do medical transcription in a hospital, and now mostly I do reports on people with cancer so the work can be heavy. But I've learned to leave work at work and not bring it home. 
How do you do that?
- Just by doing other things. I focus on my grandchildren and doing things with them. I also love to read and watch movies on the big screen. I like to analyze movies and figure out the message they're sending.
If you had to choose a movie that represented your life, which would it be?
- That’s a very good question but I don’t have a very good answer! [laughing]
Can you recommend to us a movie? Maybe an Italian one?- The last movie that really hit me was "The Imitation Game." I loved it. I also saw the new Disney’s Cinderella, and it’s excellent with a great message for young girls! My favourite Italian movie would probably be "Il Postino."
Speaking of Italy, do you have Italian family?
- Yes, I do. In fact, I’m half Italian, half Scottish. My father is Italian, my grandparents were both Italian and my grandparents families lived next door to each other in Sicily. 
How long have you been studying Italian?
- Probably five years in the same group as Donna and Annette. That’s why we came to the school together. 
This is your first time studying abroad?
- Yes. I have been wanting to study in Italy for about five years. I thought of coming by myself, but then Donna and Annette wanted to come too. So it took us a couple of years to put it together.
What did your family say when you said “I’m going to Italy to learn Italian for a month”?
- My grandchildren said, “Don’t go!” They miss me. But everybody was so happy for me. My father was just delighted that I could come to Italy and learn Italian. I don’t think he was encouraged as a young person to learn Italian. He grew up in Chicago and they wanted him to fit in the United States.
Why did you choose Siena? What did you know before you came here?
- I’d been to Siena before and always loved it. It is really the perfect size, plenty to do, not too small, not too big. Then I started to look for a school and I read the reviews for Saena Iulia and it was like, “Wow, I would really like to go there!” Also, when I would e-mail Mauro, he was so responsive. It didn’t matter when I e-mailed. He responded quickly.  
Are you happy with your decision?
- Oh yes, very, very glad! I’m really planning on coming back again and I also want to do Skype lessons, just to keep me motivated and learning. I have to say that the teachers are fantastic! They were always so patient, and they are experts in correcting your errors. I never felt stupid! I love all the history that Mauro showed us with his lessons and the excursions> It was perfect. 
What will you advise somebody who is looking for a similar experience?
- Just go for it!

Julie, di dove sei ?
- Vengo dagli Stati Uniti. Adesso abito a Redding in California, ma sono nata nel Nevada. Dopo aver fatto la scuola vicino a Napa Valley, ho vissuto nell’Oregon, poi mi sono trasferita in California e mi sono sposata, ho avuto due figli, ho divorziato e mi sono sposata per la seconda volta. Lui aveva già due figli, quindi adesso ho quattro figli e sette nipoti.
Ti sei trasferita molte volte nella tua vita! Qual’è il tuo posto preferito ?
- Probabilmente vicino al mare. Ho vissuto in una città chiamata Fortuna, che fortuna! [ridendo] Lì si trova l’unico posto dove puoi vedere le sequoie giganti, è bellissimo. Redding, dove abito adesso, ha molte attività all’aria aperta, laghi, sci in inverno, ecc.
Perfetto per il tuo spirito avventuriero! Ce ne parli un po’? 
- Sì! Per esempio 20 anni fa ho portato mio figlio, che aveva 15 anni, a fare uno scavo archeologico in Giordania per due mesi. Abbiamo lavorato molto, ci alzavamo alle 4:30 del mattino, ma è stata un’esperienza incredibile. Ho fatto anche molti sport acquatici come kayak e canottaggio. Amo anche la bicicletta. 
Per tutta la tua vita?
- Soprattutto dopo aver conosciuto il mio secondo marito. Lui faceva surf, volava in aeroplano, di tutto … quindi abbiamo avuto molte avventure insieme. 
Qual è stata la più pazza?
- Una volta, abbiamo avuto un giorno veramente folle. Ci siamo alzati molto presto, abbiamo preso un piccolo aereo perché mio marito era pilota. Siamo andati al mare e lui ha fatto surf. Poi siamo andati in aereo in un’altra città vicina e fatto paracadutismo, dopo siamo tornati, siamo andati in montagna e abbiamo sciato di notte, tutto nello stesso giorno!
Suona molto divertente! Ma non avevi paura a volte ?
- Dipende … il paracadutismo è spaventosamente intenso. L’ho fatto molte volte però e mi piace molto.
Il tuo lavoro è molto diverso dal paracadutismo, vero?
- Certo! [ridendo] Faccio trascrizioni mediche all’ospedale e adesso scrivo molti rapporti di persone malate di cancro, quindi è un giornata triste al lavoro, ma ho imparato a lasciare i problemi lì prima di tornare a casa.
Come fai?
- Soltanto facendo altre cose.  Mi concentro sui miei nipoti e faccio cose con loro. Mi piace anche leggere e guardare film al cinema. Mi piace analizzare i film, capire che tipo di messaggio viene trasmesso. 
Se dovessi scegliere un film che rappresentasse la tua vita, quale sarebbe? 
- Questa è una buonissima domanda, ma non c’è una buonissima risposta! [ridendo]
Puoi consigliarci un bel film? Magari italiano ?
- L’ultimo film che mi ha colpito è stato The Imitation Game, bellissimo. Ho visto anche Cinderella, la versione di Disney, è un film eccellente con un bel messaggio per le ragazzine! Il mio film italiano preferito è Il Postino. 
Parlando dell’Italia, hai una famiglia italiana?
- Certo. Infatti, sono mezza italiana e mezza scozzese. Mio padre è italiano, i miei nonni erano italiani e le loro famiglie vivevano una accanto all’altra in Sicilia. 
Da quanto tempo studi l’italiano?
- Più o meno da cinque anni, nello stesso gruppo di Annette e Donna, quindi siamo venute insieme alla Saena Iulia.
Questa è la prima volta che studi all’estero?
- Sì. Ho voluto studiare italiano in Italia da cinque anni. Prima pensavo di venire da sola, ma dopo Donna ed Annette volevano venire anche loro, quindi ci abbiamo messo un paio di anni in più per organizzare il viaggio.
Cosa ha detto la tua famiglia quando gli hai detto “vado in Italia per un mese ad imparare la lingua”?
- I miei nipoti hanno detto “non andare via”! Sentono la mia mancanza. Ma tutti sono molto felici per me, specialmente mio padre perché penso che lui, quando era giovane, non è stato incoraggiato ad imparare l’italiano. Lui è cresciuto a Chicago e i suoi genitori volevano che si adattasse agli Stati Uniti.
E perché hai scelto Siena? Sapevi qualcosa prima di venire? 
- Ero già venuta a Siena e mi era piaciuta molto. Ha veramente la dimensione perfetta, c’è tanto da fare ma non è troppo piccola e non troppo grande. Dopo ho cominciato a cercare una scuola, ho letto i commenti di Saena Iulia e ho pensato “wow, mi piacerebbe veramente andare in questa scuola!” Inoltre ogni volta che ho scritto a Mauro, non importava quando, lui mi rispondeva sempre molto velocemente. 
E adesso, pensi di aver preso la decisione giusta?
- Ma certo, sono molto contenta! Veramente penso di ritornare e voglio anche fare lezione su skype, così continuo a imparare. Devo dire che gli insegnanti sono fantastici! Sono sempre stati molto pazienti e sono esperti nel correggerti nella misura giusta. Non mi sono mai sentita stupida! Mi sono molto piaciute tutte le storie che Mauro ci ha insegnato nelle sue lezioni e nelle gite, era bellissimo. 
Cosa consiglieresti a qualcuno che sta cercando di fare un’esperienza simile?
- Direi: “Vai avanti!”
